Natural Family Planning
What is Natural Family Planning (NFP)?
NFP is the general title for the scientific, natural and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies.
(United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)
These methods are based on observation of the naturally occurring signs and symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Couples using NFP to avoid pregnancy abstain from intercourse and genital contact during the fertile phase of the woman’s cycle. No drugs, devices, or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy.
(United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)
NFP reflects the dignity of the human person within the context of marriage and family life, promotes openness to life, and recognizes the value of the child. By respecting the love-giving and life-giving natures of marriage, NFP can enrich the bond between husband and wife.
(Standards for Diocesan Natural Family Planning Ministry)

What is the Creighton Model System (CrMS)?
CrMS is a model of NFP that was developed by Dr. Thomas Hilgers (OB/GYN) and colleagues in the 1970s. CrMS is a standardized model of NFP based on scientific research conducted at the Saint Paul VI Institute. It can be used to identify days of fertility and infertility and help couples achieve or avoid pregnancy. For avoiding pregnancy, CrMS has 99.5% method effectiveness and 96.8% use effectiveness. CrMS can be used with NaProTECHNOLOGY™ to help identify and evaluate various women’s health issues such as infertility.
